HSQE Manager – Guildford, Surrey

Thomson are looking for an experienced HSQE professional with proven practical experience of working in health and safety. This person will need to be proficient in providing accurate, clear health and safety advice to remote site teams, underpinned by strong relevant, legal knowledge. 

The Role 

We are looking for an HSQE Manager to work alongside the TEC leadership team to implement and maintain the Thomson HSQE management systems to ensure a safe and healthy working environment. The role also entails maintaining and reviewing all the company’s accreditation portals on an ongoing basis and conducting regular internal audits in line with our ISO certificate requirements.  A demonstratable understanding of the relevant UK Health, Safety and Environmental legislation, will also be needed.

Reporting to senior management, the HSQE Manager will work closely with employees on all levels and across all areas of the business to make safe behaviour a habit and develop a culture of continuous HSQE improvement. Although based from our Head Office in Guildford, you will need to provide support to all of our regional offices, which will involve travelling to them on occasion. You should be willing to travel to site to conduct site inspections and incident investigations nationally. 

Thomson has a range of accreditations covering HSQE, which the postholder will be directly involved in managing. These include: ISO9001/14001, RISQS, CHAS, Constructionline, SafeContractor, Achilles UVDB & Avetta

You will be responsible for keeping up to date with relevant HS&E legislation and ensuring that Thomson remains compliant at all times. You will need to be personable, approachable and have the ability to engage with our employees, clients and subcontractors to ensure they fulfil their HSQE responsibilities. Taking the lead on internal and external audits, you will have a high level of attention to detail and will maintain our integrated Q&E Management System, updating and writing new policies and procedures.  

To be successful in this role you will: 

• You must hold a minimum qualification of a NEBOSH Level 6 National Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals, or a relevant university degree and hold CertIOSH membership (working towards CMIOSH is desirable). 
• Hold internal auditor certification, from a UKAS recognised provider, and have experience of conducting regular internal audits in line with our ISO certification requirements.
• Have practical experience and understanding of the requirements of managing of all the company’s online accreditation portals, on an ongoing basis.
• Have a positive ‘can do’ attitude and be an ambassador to our company and its core values of Respect, Integrity, Support and Excellence  
• Although not essential, you will ideally have previous experience or knowledge in environmental services (i.e. ecology, landscaping, or arboriculture) or infrastructure (rail, highways or water) 
• Be a comfortable and confident communicator (written and oral) with an ability to communicate to colleagues, clients, and any authorities such as the HSE and the Environment Agency, if required. 
• An ability to be influential, supportive and reassuring across all levels of our organisation while giving confident and accurate HSQE advice and support. 
• Willingness and ability to take ownership of the HSQE function and ensuring that all areas of the business have the full HSQE support they require. 
• Be pragmatic, self-motivated, and organised. 
• Comfortable in a fast paced and changing environment where adaptability is key. 
• Have a full UK driving licence and the right to work in the UK 
• Be computer literate.

This position will be primarily based from our offices in the Surrey Research Park.  However, we offer flexible hybrid working which can be tailored to suit the needs of both the candidate and Thomson business needs.
