Ecologist Overview

Ecologists study the relationships between plants, animals and the environment. Ecologists often perform a lot of research, collecting data, performing analysis, and writing environmental impact studies. Ecologist’s jobs often involve collaborating closely with companies to enhance their green technology and processes, while some work for the government in consultancy or advisory positions.

Salary Expectations

A typical starting salary for an ecologist currently starts at approximately £22,000 for entry-level roles and rises to over £45,000 for senior-level positions. Once qualified, ecologists can expect to be earning at least 12% above the national average annual wage, with average salaries for an ecologist with several years’ experience standing at a little over £35,000. Ecological Consultancy positions can include higher salaries. Other benefits include pensions, health insurance and company car for some ecology roles. Working hours and conditions are dependent on the type of role and the level of responsibility, the projects and ecological surveys. Senior ecologists tend to include more office-management duties.

Responsibilities of an Ecologist

Ecologists typically perform field surveys to collect biological details about the volume and distribution of selected species. Ecologists conduct taxonomies, classifying individual organisms for further research and analysis. Sampling strategies are often used, along with several habitat surveying techniques, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), aerial photography, Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and maps. Ecologists are typically responsible for generating environmental impact assessments, carrying out site research, report writing and delivering recommendations for businesses. Other key responsibilities of an ecologist include working on habitat management and development, data analysis and in some cases, teaching in schools or at field centres.

Working as an Ecologist

Opportunities to work as an ecologist are available nationwide in urban and rural regions. Project sites can include diverse habitats, from woodlands and grassland to brownfield sites, cliff tops and dunes. Surveying is typically performed by smaller teams or some cases, individually. More often than not, ecologists work as part of a bigger multidisciplinary team, including engineers, rangers and conservation managers. Fieldwork can be physically challenging, and patience is often needed to collect the required data.

What qualifications are needed to be an Ecologist?

A degree or equivalent in biological science or environmental subject is typically required to pursue a career in ecology. Some employers may prefer a postgraduate qualification, particularly for specialist ecology roles. There are opportunities for newly qualified ecologists to progress with their training and continue the learning and development process by joining professional ecology organisations nationwide.
