We started out 10 years ago with our core product the Chimney Sheep. It’s a chimney blocker made of wool so what else could it be called? Founder and inventor Sally Phillips worked as an ecologist, surveying buildings for bats. She became aware of how many open chimneys there were, and being an enthusiastic environmentalist, was concerned about how much heat was being lost up chimneys. Living in the land of sheep, it seemed obvious to use sheep wool that was virtually a waste product and develop it into a chimney blocker.
Over the years the product range has expanded. The constant information about environmental degradation is depressing, particularly since there seems to be so little we as individuals can do about it. Solutions like using a paper cotton wool bud instead of a plastic one really wasn’t going to make that much difference. So we added products made of recycled plastic to the range. Every item made of recycled plastic is one less (or several less) plastic items in landfill or the sea. We have gardening products that reduce herbicide use. We have non-toxic pest control. Have a look, we have a whole load of stuff now, and want to add more.
We put around 20% of our profits into a Community Interest Company called Buy Land Plant Trees. We’ve got 180 acres of land, have planted around 70,000 trees with ambitious plans to plant a significantly greater number. You can’t fix the whole world, but you can do your best on the bit you’re on, and planting trees seems to be a good way of going about this.
Chimney Sheep Ltd currently has 15 full time employees and has been growing around 30% year on year.
